Fall Festivals Near Portland, Maine: The 2026 Dates, Verified
On the morning I put this together, three different October dates for Harvest on the Harbor were circulating in search results. One listing said October 15 to 17. Another said October 24 to 26. A third said October 29 to 30. Only one of those is right, and the reason the wrong ones exist is more interesting than the correction: the festival's own website has the correct dates in the body of the page and the 2025 dates buried in its metadata, which is the part machines read. The humans updated the page. Nobody updated the file card.
That is the whole problem with fall festival planning around here. The events are excellent and the information about them is a mess, and the mess is not coming from some sketchy aggregator. It is coming from the organizers themselves, one surface at a time.
So this is a verified calendar. Every date below was checked against the organization that actually runs the event, on August 2, 2026. Where an organizer has not published a 2026 date yet, I say so instead of guessing.
The verified 2026 calendar

Cumberland Fair, Cumberland. September 27 to October 3. The 154th running, at the fairgrounds on Blanchard Road. Adults 13 and over pay $15 daily, twelve and under are free, gates open at 8am and the buildings run 9am to 9pm. It is the closest thing Greater Portland has to a real agricultural fair, and the giant pumpkin weigh-off is worth structuring a day around. Full detail in our Cumberland Fair guide.
Freeport Fall Festival, Freeport. October 2 to 4. The 27th annual, free, and genuinely large: the organizer's own page promises more than 200 New England artists, makers and food producers spread across six downtown sites, with live music on five stages. Hours are Friday noon to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 6pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm. Park at L.L.Bean's corporate headquarters at Casco Street and Route 1 and take the free shuttle; it runs 8am to 7pm Friday and Saturday and 8am to 6pm Sunday, and each loop takes about fifteen minutes.
Maine Craft Weekend, statewide. October 3 and 4. A statewide open-studio tour produced by the Maine Crafts Association, and Freeport is one of two featured cities this year. It lands directly on top of the Freeport Fall Festival's second and third days, which is deliberate and works in your favor: one trip, two events.
Harvest on the Harbor, Portland. October 15 to 17. Three separate ticketed events rather than one festival ground. Thursday the 15th is a Maine Distillers' Guild happy hour, 5 to 7:30pm. Friday the 16th is the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition, doors at 12:30pm. Saturday the 17th is the Maine OysterFest in two sessions, 1:30 to 3pm and 3 to 4:30pm, with general admission including eighteen oysters. Tickets went on sale in July.
Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival, Freeport. October 16, 17 and 18. Thousands of lit jack-o-lanterns on the L.L.Bean flagship campus, free, benefiting Camp Sunshine in Casco. Note the shape change: in 2025 this was a single Saturday running noon to 8pm. For 2026 the parent organization's event schedule lists three days. The detailed schedule for those three days has not been published yet.

The two clusters, and why it matters
Read that list again and you will notice the season is not evenly spread. It is two dense clusters with a two-week gap in between.
The first cluster is the last weekend of September through the first weekend of October, when the Cumberland Fair's final days, the Freeport Fall Festival and Maine Craft Weekend all overlap. If you have one fall Saturday to spend, October 3 is the day with the most on it, and it is also the day Freeport will be hardest to park in.
The second cluster is the weekend of October 15 to 18, when Harvest on the Harbor and the Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival run against each other. Those two do not compete for the same person on the same afternoon, though. Harvest on the Harbor is a ticketed adult food event in Portland; the Pumpkin Festival is a free family thing in Freeport that peaks after dark. Saturday the 17th you could plausibly do the OysterFest at 1:30 and be in Freeport for the pumpkin lighting.
The gap between the clusters, roughly October 5 through 14, is empty of major festivals and is also when the foliage inland from Portland starts to turn. That is not a coincidence worth over-reading, but it is a good week for a drive. Which sources are lying to you, specifically
This is the part a directory cannot write, because a directory has no way to tell you that one of its own entries is stale.
Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival publishes two different answers on two of its own websites. The parent organization's event schedule at campsunshine.org lists October 16, 17 and 18, 2026, with a 2026 copyright. The festival's own dedicated site, campsunshinepumpkinfestivals.org, still leads with "October 18, 2025" and carries a 2025 copyright. The dedicated site is the one everything links to as the place for more information. So the surface that ranks is the surface that is a year behind, and the correct date is on the page nobody sends you to.
Visit Freeport's event listing for the same festival is marked "This event has passed." It was last modified in September 2025 and still describes the 2025 single-day version. This is the same organization whose Freeport Fall Festival page was updated on August 1, 2026 and is completely current. One page maintained, one page not, on the same site.
Harvest on the Harbor's page body is current and its metadata is not. The visible text gives October 15 to 17, 2026 with a full event breakdown. The page description that search engines and aggregators read still says "October 30 to November 1, 2025." That single stale line is almost certainly why two wrong October dates were circulating.
Visit Freeport's Fall Festival page contradicts itself on scale. The page description says over 175 artists; the body of the same page says over 200. Small, harmless, and a useful reminder that the first number you see is not automatically the checked one.
The pattern underneath all of these is the same one we found writing our apple picking guide a few days ago: the website is somebody's fourth job. These are not careless organizations. The Freeport Fall Festival has a shuttle schedule down to the minute. It is that maintaining five web surfaces is a different job from running an event, and the second job is the one that gets done.
The three people ask about that are not on this list
Fryeburg Fair, the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta, and the Common Ground Country Fair in Unity are all wonderful and all outside the 25-minute radius this site covers. Fryeburg is roughly an hour and fifteen from Portland, Damariscotta about an hour, Unity closer to an hour and a half.
I did not verify their 2026 dates against their organizers for this piece, so I am not going to print dates for them. Given everything above, take that as advice rather than a limitation: go to the organizer's own site, and if the copyright line at the bottom says last year, keep looking or call.

What is the busiest fall festival weekend in Greater Portland?
October 3 and 4. The Cumberland Fair's final weekend, the Freeport Fall Festival's main days and statewide Maine Craft Weekend all fall on it. Freeport in particular will be at capacity, which is why the organizers run continuous shuttles from the corporate campus rather than expecting you to find a space downtown.
Do I need tickets in advance for Harvest on the Harbor?
Yes, for all three events. It is not a walk-up festival ground; it is three separately ticketed sittings on three consecutive days. Tickets went on sale in July 2026 through harvestontheharbor.com, and the OysterFest in particular is split into two timed sessions, so the session you want can sell out independently.
Why do different websites list different dates for the same Maine festival?
Because most of these events are run by small organizations that maintain several web surfaces at once: a main site, a dedicated event microsite, a chamber or tourism listing, and social media. The updates rarely happen on the same day, and page metadata is updated last or not at all. The rule that has never failed us: trust the organizer's own site, read the copyright year at the bottom of it, and if the visible text and the search snippet disagree, believe the visible text.
When does fall foliage peak near Portland?
Later than most people expect. Greater Portland sits in the Maine Forest Service's Zone 1, which peaks mid to late October, with the immediate coast turning last, roughly October 21 to 27.
