The L.L. Bean Flagship Reopens September 18: What's New and How to Plan Your Trip
The biggest store in Freeport right now is a tent. A serious tent, to be fair: 28,000 square feet, hard sided, with fitting rooms and registers, its exterior styled after the Acadia 8-Person Cabin Tent that L.L. Bean sells. But it is still a tent in a parking lot, pitched beside the construction site where the most photographed retail building in Maine used to stand. That arrangement finally gets an end date. The rebuilt L.L. Bean flagship opens Friday, September 18, 2026, with a grand opening weekend running through September 20 and a celebration calendar that continues through October.
If you have driven up Route 1 any time in the past year and a half and wondered what happened to the postcard version of Freeport, this page is the answer: what the rebuild actually changes, what is open on the campus right now, and how a local would time a visit this fall.
The Dates: September 18 to 20, Then a Party Through October
L.L. Bean announced the reopening in June. The grand opening weekend runs September 18 to 20, and the company says celebrations will continue through October with concerts, contests, and giveaways. The announced lineup, per Visit Freeport's event listing, also includes a heritage celebration featuring vintage products, guest appearances from the Red Sox and Portland's Hearts of Pine, the 27th annual Freeport Fall Festival, and Camp Sunshine's Pumpkinfest, all folding into the same fall window. After that, the Northern Lights holiday display takes over the expanded Discovery Park in early November, with New Year's Eve festivities returning as well.
Specific event schedules get posted to L.L. Bean's Flagship Re-Boot page and the flagship store's Facebook page, and opening-day hours had not been published as of late July. Check those before you drive up for a specific event.
What the $50 Million Rebuild Actually Adds
This was not a renovation in the paint-and-carpet sense. The project, first announced in January 2023 at $50 million, tore down and rebuilt the flagship with a new entrance and facade. The store you walk into on September 18 is a different building.
The famous stuff survives, upgraded. The indoor trout pond comes back bigger, rebuilt as a multi-tiered pool with more viewpoints and better accessibility for fish watching. The stream tank, the other perennial kid magnet, gets twice as much swimming space and two big viewing bubbles. The kids' department adds a brand-new play area that L.L. Bean describes as Maine summer camp vibes all year long.
The additions are aimed at making the store a place to linger. There is an expanded in-store cafe, called the 1912 Cafe in the reopening announcement, a nod to the year Leon Leonwood Bean founded the company. A new Custom Shop handles personalized gear, expanding the monogramming service that has been scattered around the campus during construction. Outside, the rebuild adds green space to Discovery Park, the lawn in the middle of the campus that hosts the summer concert series and the holiday lights.
One honest note about the heritage angle: the original 1917 shop, which sat above the Freeport post office, is long gone, and L.L. Bean confirms none of the original structure survives in the new building. The company says the new design tells that history instead, with archival items and interactive displays. Also worth knowing: the images circulating of the new store are architectural renderings, and L.L. Bean's own pages caveat that they depict final design intent. Judge the building in person.
What Is Open in Freeport Right Now
If you are visiting before September 18, the campus is fully functional, just rearranged. Camp L.L.Bean, the giant tent, is the main store: it holds men's, women's, and kids' apparel plus outerwear, and runs 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Those departments move back into the new flagship in September.
The Hunting and Fishing store on the same campus at 95 Main Street stays open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and it is carrying more than hunting and fishing gear during construction: footwear, bags, and dog supplies all live there for now, and online orders for in-store pickup are routed there too. The separate Bike, Boat and Ski store and the Home store both remain open, holding camping, hiking, and travel gear among them. Monogramming is available in any campus store.
Parking is the one real friction point. Some of the main lot is consumed by construction and the tent, so expect to park farther out and walk. L.L. Bean publishes a campus map with current parking, and there is signage everywhere.
The 24-Hour Question
The flagship's no-locks-on-the-doors routine is the most famous fact about it, and it is also the thing most guides currently get wrong. The flagship building has not been open at all during the rebuild, let alone open around the clock, yet plenty of travel sites still describe a 24-hour store as if nothing happened. Right now the only building on the campus open 24 hours is the Hunting and Fishing store.
Here is the part we cannot tell you yet: L.L. Bean has not announced whether the rebuilt flagship resumes 24-hour operation when it opens. The company likes to say its doors have been open almost every day for over 100 years, which is true and also carefully phrased. Until llbean.com's own store page shows around-the-clock hours again, assume the 3 a.m. Bean run still ends at the Hunting and Fishing store, among the fly rods. How a Local Would Play It
If you hate crowds, do not go September 18 to 20. A three-day grand opening with concerts, giveaways, and pro sports appearances, on a campus that already draws heavy foot traffic, in a town fed by a single exit off I-295, is going to be a scene. The move is a midweek visit in late September or early October: the new store will be just as new, the foliage will be arriving, and you can actually park. If you want the spectacle, though, opening weekend is exactly that, and bringing kids to the first look at the new trout pond is a legitimately good day out.
The smarter fall plan is to treat the new flagship as one stop in a Freeport day rather than the whole trip. The town is 25 minutes from Portland and works well as a half day among our day trips within an hour of Portland, and the best parts of it are not stores at all: Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, the working waterfront farm next door, and the beer scene, all covered in our guide to Freeport beyond the outlets. Time it right and you can fold the store visit into a fall foliage loop, which peaks in southern Maine in mid-October, conveniently inside the celebration window.
One more calendar note: the reopening lands the weekend before the Cumberland Fair opens on September 27, so the last two weeks of September are unusually busy on this stretch of coast. Book dinner reservations ahead if you are making a full day of it.
