Christmas and Holiday Events Near Portland, Maine, 2026: Dates, Ticket Prices, and What Sells Out
Gardens Aglow put its 2026 tickets on sale on September 8, with a line on the page saying non-ticketholders will be turned away at the gate. Eleven days later, three of the biggest holiday pages in Greater Portland still describe 2025: Portland Downtown's Monument Square tree lighting page, L.L.Bean's Northern Lights page and Victoria Mansion's Christmas page all carry last year's dates as of September 19, 2026. That gap is the whole reason to plan the season in September. The things that sell out are already selling, and the things that do not sell out have not bothered to update yet.
Below is every major holiday event within reach of Portland that had posted 2026 dates by September 19, read off each organizer's own site, with prices where the organizer prints them, plus the three that have not posted and what their pages currently say.
The two that sell out, and one is already selling
Gardens Aglow, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay. November 14 through January 2, Thursday through Sunday plus select dates, 4 to 9 p.m., closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. This year's theme is "Gathered in Maine." The Gardens print a full 2026 price grid, which almost nobody else on this list does: adults $20, $24 or $28 depending on the night, seniors and veterans $18, $22 or $26, children $10, $14 or $18, with the three tiers named Family Value, Standard and Premium. The FAQ does not say which nights fall in which tier. Members get 20 percent off. A $50 VIP add-on buys free date exchanges and a fire pit; without it, moving your date costs $2.50 a ticket. Tickets went on sale September 8 (members September 1), are advance-only, and the page says flatly that you cannot buy at the door. If you want a Saturday in December, book it this month. Boothbay is well beyond the one-hour ring in our day-trips guide, so plan it as an evening; a free shuttle runs from the Boothbay Harbor town office Friday through Sunday nights, last ride up around 7:45 p.m.
The Polar Express, Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad, 65 Thames Street, Portland. The railroad has posted its full 2026 departure board: November 20 through December 28, no trains on December 24 or 25, with departures between 1:30 and 7:45 p.m. depending on the day. The ride lasts about 50 minutes. Prices are the clearest in the region and worth reading twice: Coach $35, First Class $65, Presidential $105, each $5 more on the asterisked peak departures, which cluster on Saturday evenings and every night from December 20 to 28. Lap children are $5 in any class. Be on the train 20 minutes before departure; there are no refunds if you miss it, and the railroad provides no parking. As of September 19 the schedule page still says to book "once tickets are released," while the railroad's homepage already carries live eTix links for November dates. The Freeport and Kennebunkport festivals, and the Friday-night conflict
Sparkle Celebration, Freeport. Visit Freeport has posted the 33rd Sparkle for December 4 through 13, 2026, opening Friday, December 4 with the Parade of Lights down Main Street and Santa arriving to wake the Talking Christmas Tree at Main and Bow. Ten days of the Stealth Elf's gift card giveaways, the Sparkle Stroll and the Frosty Frolic follow. Two cautions from the page itself. The parade start time for 2026 is not posted yet; lower on the same page the Talking Tree schedule, the Early Bird Sale-A-Bration and the Black Friday dates are all still 2025's. And the town's parking is the real constraint, which is why we keep a separate Freeport parking guide.
Christmas Prelude, Kennebunkport. The Kennebunkport Business Association has posted the 45th Prelude for December 3 through 13, 2026, and its signature-event list is more complete than Freeport's: caroling in Dock Square at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4, the tree lit at 6, and the Cape Porpoise lobster trap tree lit at 7 that same night. The full schedule lives in the Prelude app rather than on the site, and the guide linked from the homepage is still 2025's. Kennebunkport is inside our one-hour day-trip ring.
Put those two together and you get the season's scheduling problem: the region's two biggest small-town openers are the same Friday night, December 4, at opposite ends of the region. Pick one. If you have small kids, Freeport's parade is the shorter evening; if you want the postcard, Kennebunkport is the postcard.
Two Nutcrackers, one weekend, and the night with the orchestra
Portland has two professional Nutcracker productions, they both open the first weekend of December, and the internet routinely conflates them.
Maine State Ballet's The Nutcracker, Merrill Auditorium. Six performances: Friday, November 27, Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29 at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 5 at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. Balanchine choreography for the Snowflakes, Marzipan and Waltz of the Flowers, with the Maine State Ballet Orchestra and Choir live. This is the rare Portland performing arts page that prints its prices: $23 to $93 before fees, with a per-ticket service fee of $4 to $13 depending on the seat, $4 off for children 12 and under, seniors 62 and over, and groups of 10 or more. Approximate length two hours. PortTix is the only authorized box office; the company says so in bold because resale sites mark these up. The page prints no year next to its dates; the days of the week match 2026.
Portland Ballet's A Victorian Nutcracker. A Portland-specific version whose first act is set in Victoria Mansion's own history. The regional dates: Tuesday, December 15 at 7 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium, the only performance with the Portland Ballet Orchestra live under Lucas Richman; then Westbrook Performing Arts Center on Saturday, December 19 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday, December 20 at 2 p.m., followed by A Very Nutty Nutcracker, the company's comic version, on Sunday, December 20 at 7 p.m. A December 5 pair in Sanford is outside our radius. Portland Ballet prints no prices; tickets are through PortTix. A 10 a.m. community performance on December 15 is for groups of 10 or more, about two hours with intermission, reservations "will open this Fall." Our opinion: if you are choosing one Nutcracker night on merit, the December 15 Merrill date with the live orchestra is the one, and it is a school night, so it will be easier to get into than the weekend shows.
Magic of Christmas, Merrill Auditorium
The Portland Symphony Orchestra has posted twelve performances over two weekends: Friday, December 11 at 2 p.m. (listed as a preview) and 7 p.m.; Saturday, December 12 at 2 and 7; Sunday, December 13 at 11 a.m., the one show tagged family-friendly, and 3 p.m.; Friday, December 18 at 2 and 7; Saturday, December 19 at 2 and 7; and Sunday, December 20 at 1 and 5 p.m. A digital version is also listed. The PSO's event pages give dates and times, note that programs and dates are subject to change, and print neither ticket prices nor a running time; both live in the PortTix checkout. What has not been posted for 2026, and what the old pages still say
Monument Square tree lighting, Portland. Portland Downtown's page still describes the 2025 event: Friday, November 28, 2025, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with a Buddy the Elf meet-and-greet, an outdoor showing of Elf, and the lighting at 6:30. There is no 2026 date on the page as of September 19. The 2025 edition was the Friday after Thanksgiving, which in 2026 is November 27; treat that as a pattern, not an announcement.
L.L.Bean Northern Lights, Freeport. L.L.Bean's Northern Lights page, as of September 19, opens with "This year's celebration may be over," lists November 21 to December 24, 2025, and still says renovations are ongoing at the flagship, with the projection show on the Camp L.L.Bean tent. The flagship reopened on September 18 and the tent is gone, so the page is a season and a building out of date. No 2026 dates are posted.
Christmas at Victoria Mansion, 109 Danforth Street. The Mansion's holiday page still reads "2025 Season: November 28, 2025 to January 4, 2026," with self-paced tours Tuesday through Sunday, entries every half hour from 10 a.m., last admission 3 p.m. and holiday pricing the same as the regular season. Nothing for 2026 is posted. The Mansion's regular season runs May 1 to October 31, so expect the holiday dates to appear once that closes.

How a local would plan it
Book Gardens Aglow first, because it is the only thing here that tells you outright it will sell out. Book the Polar Express second if you have a child under eight; the $35 coach seat on a weeknight is the reasonable version, and $110 for a 50-minute Presidential seat on a peak night is the tourist version. Pick a Nutcracker by date, since the two barely overlap. Keep December 4 for Freeport or Kennebunkport, not both. Leave the Portland tree lighting, Northern Lights and Victoria Mansion for a November decision, because their own pages cannot yet tell you when they are.
