What Adult Education Classes Cost in Greater Portland, Maine

Italian 1 at Deering High School, thirteen Wednesday nights from September 16 for $149, was already waitlist only on September 12, and on September 17, the morning after its first class, it was gone from Portland's registration portal altogether, along with every other class that had already started. Basic Drawing at PATHS, four Mondays in late November for $69, was full two and a half months before it starts and still was on September 17, when Basic Watercolor, four Tuesdays from October 27, had filled too. If you have been meaning to sign up for a fall adult ed class, the catalog you are reading has already been picked over by people who read it in August.

The good news is that there is a lot of catalog. Four school-district adult education programs inside twenty-five minutes of downtown Portland list a combined 389 fall enrichment sessions, every one of them with a price on it, and all four now sell through the same registration system. That last fact is what makes this article possible. It also produces the strangest finding in it: the same class, on the same night, in the same room, sold by four towns at four different prices.

Everything below was read off each program's own registration portal or posted fall 2026 catalog on September 12, 2026. Counts are live listings on that day, and seats move daily, so treat the open-seat notes as a snapshot. The catalogs also shrink as the season runs: Portland's portal drops a class from the listing once it has started, so the 130 sessions we counted on September 12 read as 116 on September 17, and every count in this piece will be smaller by the time you open the portal.

The four catalogs, side by side

"Typical price" is the median of every listed price, so half the sessions cost less and half cost more. Windham's is inflated by 51 self-paced national online courses at $195 and up that sit in the same catalog as a $44 cooking night; its local, in-person classes mostly run $36 to $84, with a few longer workshops above that. Portland's is high for a different reason, which is the next section.

Portland is now mostly a makerspace catalog

Of Portland Adult Education's 130 fall listings, 90 are at Factory 3, the makerspace at 105 St. James Street. Twelve are at PATHS on Allen Avenue, seven at Deering High School, seven at Lincoln Middle School, four at Ocean Avenue School and ten online. If your mental picture of Portland adult ed is a language class in a high school on a weeknight, that is now 30 of 130 sessions.

The Factory 3 sessions are one-day workshops, three to five hours long, priced for shop access and small groups. Intro to Welding is $180 for three and a half hours, with four or fewer seats per session and the same session repeated eight times through December 2. Intro to Sewing is $130 for four hours, offered ten times. Intro to Woodshop is $170 for four hours. Intro to Laser Cutting and Intro to 3D Printing are $110 for three hours. Intro to Stained Glass is $180 for four and a half hours. Intro to Drawing is $70 for three hours. The two priciest listings in all four catalogs are Factory 3's Intro to Bridgeport Milling Machine and Intro to Metal Lathe, $215 each for four hours.

Worked per hour, that runs from about $23 for drawing to about $54 for the milling machine, and welding sits at $51. Compare the school-building classes: Photography for Beginners at Deering is $59 for seven two-hour Thursdays, which is $4.21 an hour. Italian 1 is $149 for thirteen scheduled two-hour Wednesdays, $5.73 an hour. The makerspace classes are not overpriced for what they are, but a reader scanning the Portland catalog should know that the median has moved because the mix moved, not because a Spanish class got expensive.

Two Portland numbers worth knowing on their own. Fall Interval Fitness at Ocean Avenue School is $4 a class, Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 8 through December 10, and the listing says in red not to register online: it is drop-in, pay at the door. And Ukulele for Beginners online is $79 for four Tuesdays whether you take Session 1, which runs 6 to 7:30, or Session 2, which runs 6 to 7. Same price, a third less class.

Scarborough, Gorham and Windham: the cheap, the free and the one-night

Scarborough's catalog is built for a reader who wants to try one thing once. Thirty-one of its 44 sessions are single nights, and the median price is $40. Its multi-week classes are the value in the whole region: Guitar Basics and Beyond is $88 for six ninety-minute Wednesdays, Intro to Landscape Drawing is $86 for four two-hour nights, Intro to Oil Painting is $86 for five, and Wild About Watercolor Painting Session 2 is $88 for seven Tuesdays at two and a half hours each, which is $5.03 an hour. Seven Scarborough sessions are free: financial-planning talks, several of them presented by wealth advisors, two travel information sessions and one on caregiving. They are fine things to attend as long as you know what they are.

Gorham runs the cheapest weekly fitness in the region. Pilates/Yoga Combination is $64 for four weeks at two classes a week, so $8 a class; the beginners version is $32 for four Wednesdays, also $8 a class. Tai Chi I is $72 for nine Mondays. Line Dancing is $69 for six Tuesdays at Village Elementary, Zumba Gold $65 for six. Three Gorham sessions are free: Understanding Medicare, a presentation on the Maine Death with Dignity Act, and a substitute teacher training. CPR is $60 for a three-hour session, with three dates. Gorham's office is at 106 Weeks Road, Door 16.

Windham Raymond is the largest catalog by count and the hardest to read, because 89 of its 156 fall sessions are online and 51 of those are the $195-and-up self-paced courses. Filter those out and it looks like Gorham with a bigger building. Gentle-Moderate Mindful Yoga is $69 for six 75-minute Wednesdays at Windham Hill Church, $11.50 a class. Discovering ASL is $68 for six one-hour Tuesdays at the Windham High library, November 3 to December 8. Line Dancing at Windham Town Hall is $50 for six ninety-minute Tuesdays, the cheapest line dancing of the three towns that offer it. Introduction to Drones is $180 for three four-hour Saturdays, twelve hours of instruction for $15 an hour, and had twelve seats open. Windham's refund policy, updated July 2026 and printed in the catalog, is the most generous in writing: a full refund if you withdraw five business days before the class, and for multi-week classes a 50 percent refund or full credit if you withdraw before the second meeting.

The same class, four prices

Every one of these programs belongs to the Maine Adult Education Association and registers through the same Active Network portal, and a handful of instructors sell the same session to several towns at once. Because the four portals were open in adjacent tabs, the prices line up in a way no single catalog shows you.

Ferment This! Kombucha meets Wednesday, October 28, from 7 to 8:15 pm at Lincoln Middle School in Portland, with a Zoom option. Scarborough lists it at $25. Windham lists it at $29. Portland, whose school building it meets in, lists it at $30.

Ukulele for Beginners, four Tuesdays from September 29 on Zoom, 6 to 7:30 pm: Portland $79, Gorham $79, Windham $84, Scarborough $85.

Beginning Photoshop Elements, four Fridays from October 2, online, 7:30 to 9 pm: Scarborough $79, Windham $79, Gorham $89.

We are reporting the numbers, not a reason for them. Each program sets its own tuition and none of the four catalogs mentions that the class is sold elsewhere. No listing we read restricts a class to residents or prices non-residents differently, so a Portland reader can register through Scarborough. The practical rule: if a class is online or meets in a shared building, search the other three portals by its name before you pay.

Three things the catalogs will not tell you

Westbrook has no fall catalog we could find. Westbrook Adult Education's CourseStorm storefront read "We don't have anything available for registration right now" on September 12, the Westbrook School Department's own Adult Education link forwards to the statewide association home page rather than a Westbrook page, and the association's Westbrook listing carries a phone number, 207-854-0826, and nothing else. Three locations, no catalog. Call before you assume they run nothing; a dead storefront is not a dead program, and Portland's own CourseStorm front still says the same "nothing available" sentence while its Active portal lists 130 classes.

South Portland Adult Education does not run an enrichment program. Its program page lists high school equivalency, college transitions, English language classes and workforce training, and no hobby or fitness classes. South Portland residents looking for a weeknight class are shopping the other four catalogs.

The registration portal will try to sell you a membership. Scarborough's catalog says it plainly on the payment page: when registering for the first time, a pop-up may offer "Active Advantage." Decline it. It is a paid Active Network subscription, it is not required by any Maine adult education program, and the catalog's own words are "DECLINE this offer to avoid future credit card charges." The same portal serves all four towns, so the same pop-up can appear on all four.
