What Music Lessons Cost in Greater Portland, Maine

Maine Academy of Modern Music's 2026-27 lesson calendar opened Friday, September 4, after a closure that ran from August 30 to September 3. Gorham School of Music's fall trimester began the week of August 24. 317 Main in Yarmouth runs rolling enrollment, so a slot that was open on Labor Day may not be open by the time you read this. If you are the parent who promised a kid piano lessons over the summer, or the adult who promised yourself guitar, the two weeks after Labor Day are when the promise gets a price.

Here is the price. Of eight private lesson operators inside twenty-five minutes of downtown Portland, seven publish a real rate on their own website or booking system. One publishes its billing policy in detail and never says what the bill is.

The harder part is that the seven who publish do not publish the same shape of number. Two quote per lesson. One quotes per four-pack. Two quote a flat month that is really an annual total divided by ten or twelve. One quotes a thirteen-week trimester. One quotes per lesson but bills you for the exact count on the calendar. So below every operator is the number they print, and then the number you actually want, which is what one weekly thirty-minute lesson costs.

Everything here was read off each organization's own site, booking portal or posted PDF on September 3, 2026. No aggregator, no directory, no phone estimate.

The seven that print a number

The per-lesson column is our division, not theirs, and the two monthly operators need showing.

Maine Academy of Modern Music bills $180 a month for weekly thirty-minute lessons, September through June, ten payments. Its posted 2026-27 calendar counts exactly 36 programming days on every weekday, and the school stays open on Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day and MLK Day specifically so every lesson day gets the same 36. So $1,800 a year over 36 lessons is $50 a lesson, and 45 and 60 minutes work out to $65.28 and $80.56. That lines up with MAMM's own summer per-lesson rates of $50, $65 and $80, which is a useful sign the arithmetic is right. Joint lessons for two friends or siblings are $130, $160 and $190 a month per student, so $36.11 for a shared half hour. Add a $60 annual household registration fee. MAMM also states that need-based scholarships are available, and is one of two schools here to say so on the tuition page.

Two things a reader should know about the MAMM page. First, its tuition has moved: the school's posted 2023-24 lesson policies PDF listed $150, $200 and $250 a month for the same three lengths, so the thirty-minute rate is up 20 percent in three school years, the sixty-minute rate up 16 percent. Second, the registration fee sentence on the current lessons page still says it covers "the 2025-26 school year" while the same page links a 2026-27 calendar; it read that way on September 3 and again on September 5, two days into the new calendar. Treat $60 as current and expect the text to catch up.

Stone Coast Music in Falmouth is the only operator that dates its price list: "Prices effective 9/1/26-8/31/27," which makes it the freshest stamp in the category by a year. It bills twelve months, not ten, at $196.50, $268 and $330 for weekly thirty, forty-five and sixty-minute lessons, and it says plainly that the flat rate is 46 lessons averaged across September through August. That is $2,358 a year at thirty minutes, or $51.26 a lesson, and $69.91 and $86.09 for the longer slots. The monthly rate includes books, materials and recitals, which nobody else here bundles. Occasional or biweekly lessons, adults only for biweekly, are $48, $66 and $82.50 each, books not included. There is a $30 late fee after the fifth of the month.

317 Main is the odd one out, in a good way. Its public website has no price on it at all; the number lives in the school's booking portal, which the site links from the private lessons page. There it is unambiguous: $48 per thirty-minute lesson, $64 per forty-five, $77 per sixty, across 79 lesson listings from harp to upright bass, every one at the same rate. You are charged on the first of the month for exactly the lessons that fall in that month, four or five, not a flat average. Drop-in lessons, bookable no more than seven days out, are the same $48, $64 and $77, so there is no premium for not committing.

Portland Conservatory of Music on Neal Street is the most legible price in Portland proper: $40, $55, $70 a lesson, a $40 annual registration fee, and semesters of 16 weeks in fall, 18 in spring and 12 in summer. Students are expected to register for a full semester of weekly lessons, so the real commitment is $640 for the fall at thirty minutes and $720 for the spring. Group class tuition, the page says, varies by length, location and whether the class is sliding-scale, and it does not print those.

Midcoast School of Music at 533 Forest Avenue matches PCM at $40 for a half hour and $70 for an hour, and offers the loosest terms in the market: pay at the end of each lesson, or ask for a monthly bill. No registration fee is mentioned.

Gorham School of Music sells by the trimester, three of them tracking the school calendar plus a summer session: $520 for thirteen thirty-minute lessons and $910 for thirteen sixty-minute lessons, which is $40 and $70 a lesson, prorated if you join mid-term. Drop-in lessons are $45 a half hour, a $5 premium over the trimester rate. The page says the fall trimester began the week of August 24 and invites new students to enroll now and prorate.

Guitar Center at the Maine Mall is the cheapest published number, $128 for a four-pack of thirty-minute lessons and $240 for four hours, $32 and $60 a lesson. Seven instructors are listed for the Portland store and every one carries the identical rate. What you are buying is a room in a retail store and a teacher the store scheduled; what you are not buying is a recital, a semester or a curriculum.

The one that publishes everything except the price

GSP Music Lessons at 64 Ridgeland Avenue in South Portland teaches guitar, bass, ukulele, voice, piano, composition and production from a home studio, ages four through adult. Its policy page is more detailed than most: students at a recurring time are billed monthly, invoices go out on the first, autopay enrollment is required, 24 hours' notice earns a make-up credit, and make-up credits do not guarantee a mutually available time. We read the home page, the policy page, both instrument pages and the about page. None of them carries a dollar figure. A parent who reads all of that knows exactly how they will be charged and nothing about how much.

Two traps

The first is the state. Search "School of Rock Portland" and the location page you land on lists an address on Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland, Oregon 97214, and a faculty of Oregon musicians. It is not a Maine option, and a surprising number of Portland, Maine searches for a franchise music school end there.

The second is the word "monthly." MAMM's $180 and Stone Coast's $196.50 look like the same kind of number and are not. One is ten payments for 36 lessons, the other twelve payments for 46, and one of them includes books and recitals. Per lesson they are $1.26 apart. Per year they are $558 apart, because one of them runs through the summer and the other stops in June. Decide whether you want summer lessons before you decide which looks cheaper.

What this means for your fall

For a weekly thirty-minute lesson, the published market in Greater Portland runs from $32 to $51.26, and five of the seven sit between $40 and $50. Nobody who prints a price is far from anyone else who prints one. The differences that matter are elsewhere: whether you commit to a semester (PCM, Gorham), a school year (MAMM, 317 Main), a full calendar year (Stone Coast) or a single afternoon (Midcoast, Guitar Center, and 317 Main's drop-ins); whether a registration fee is added ($40 at PCM, $60 at MAMM, none stated elsewhere); and whether books and a recital are inside the number or on top of it.

If you want the lowest commitment at a fair rate, Midcoast School of Music at $40 pay-as-you-go and 317 Main's $48 drop-ins are the two published options that let you try a teacher without signing a term. If you want a nonprofit community school with a recital calendar, PCM, MAMM and 317 Main are the three, and they land within $10 of each other per lesson. If a flat number every month with no surprise book charges is worth more to you than the lowest per-lesson figure, Stone Coast is the only one built that way.

And if a school will not print a number, it is not necessarily the expensive one. It is just the one where you will be quoted a price in a room, with your child beside you, which is the worst position from which to compare. Call two of the published ones first.
