Privacy Policy

The short version

The Maine Agenda is a reader-supported local guide, not an ad network. We do not sell your data, we do not run third-party advertising trackers, and we do not share your information with data brokers. We collect a small amount of information to understand which guides readers find useful and to run the newsletter. You can opt out of analytics by blocking cookies, and every newsletter has a one-click unsubscribe.

What we collect when you read the site

To measure which guides are useful and how readers move through the site, we use our own first-party analytics. This records an anonymous random visitor ID, which pages you view, the website or search that referred you, how far you scroll, how long you spend on a page, and any campaign tags (UTM values) in the link you followed. For ordinary browsing we do not store your IP address and we do not collect your name or email.

What we collect when you subscribe

When you sign up for the newsletter we store your email address. At the moment you subscribe we also record your IP address, the same anonymous visitor ID, and the page you signed up from, so we can prevent abuse and understand which guides convert readers into subscribers. We use your email only to send the newsletter.

Cookies and local storage

We set one first-party cookie, named tma_vid, which holds the anonymous visitor ID and lasts about a year. We also store a temporary session ID and page count in your browser's session storage, which is cleared when you close the tab. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. If our hosting provider's privacy-friendly analytics is enabled, it measures anonymized, aggregate traffic and does not identify you.

Who helps us run the site

A few service providers process this data only to operate The Maine Agenda: our host (Vercel) serves the pages and provides aggregate traffic measurement, our database provider (Neon) stores analytics and subscriber records, and our email provider (Resend) delivers the newsletter. They act on our behalf and do not use your data for their own purposes.

Your choices

You can opt out of analytics at any time by blocking or clearing cookies for this site or by turning on your browser's tracking protection. The site works exactly the same either way. To stop the newsletter, use the unsubscribe link in any edition. To request a copy of, or deletion of, the information tied to your email, contact us using the link on our About page and we will take care of it.

Data retention

We keep analytics records to understand site usage over time and may aggregate or trim them periodically. We keep your subscriber record until you unsubscribe, after which it is marked unsubscribed and retained only as needed to honor your opt-out.

Children

This site is intended for adults planning things to do in Southern Maine. It is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle data, we will update the date at the top of this page.
