Haunted Attractions Near Portland, Maine: The 2026 Season in Review, What Each Cost, and What to Plan for 2027

Search "haunted hayride near Portland Maine" and Google will helpfully offer you Gorham, Scarborough and Portland versions of the query. None of them has an answer. Within a 25-minute drive of downtown Portland there were exactly two attractions in October 2026 whose job was to scare you, and neither of them was a hayride. Both were walks. One was scheduled for every weekend of October in Saco. The other was scheduled for six nights, total, on the sand dunes in Freeport. Everything else in this radius is either a comedy ghost tour on Commercial Street or Halloween-decorated mini golf.

That was the whole local inventory, and it is smaller than the listing sites make it look. The 2026 season ended October 31, so this page is now a record of what was scheduled and what it cost, and a starting point for next year. The New England haunt directories that rank for this query pad their Maine pages with Bangor, Lebanon and Auburn, then fill the gaps with pumpkin patches. This page does the opposite: every date, hour, price and age rule below was read off the operator's own site or its own ticket page on September 16, 2026. We have not re-read those pages since the season closed, so treat every figure as the 2026 card, not a 2027 price. Where an operator had not published something, we say so instead of guessing.

Inside the ring: what was actually within 25 minutes

Trail of Terror at Aquaboggan, Saco

980 Portland Road (Route 1), Saco. Scheduled October 2 to October 31, 2026, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. $25 per person, $10 for kids under 10 (2026 card).

This was the one real haunted walk in Greater Portland with a full season. It ran through the woods behind the Aquaboggan water park, about 20 minutes south of Portland on Route 1, and it is a volunteer-built fundraiser for OOB365, the group that stages Old Orchard Beach's free community events. The 2026 storyline, per the organizer's own copy, was a Banshee who had commandeered the other holidays, with a Krampus scene and something the organizer described as an Easter Bunny gone wrong.

Two practical facts mattered more than the theme. First, the gate was cash only. Card buyers had to buy online through the Ticketbud page linked from trailofterrormaine.com; those tickets were non-refundable and good for any night the trail was open. Second, the ticket page gave a date range and a time window, not a night-by-night calendar. Neither trailofterrormaine.com nor oob365.com printed which nights of the week the trail ran when we read them on September 16. The mini golf next door ran Friday through Sunday, and a regional haunt directory listed the trail on the same nights, but that was not the operator saying it. If you plan to go in 2027, confirm the nights with OOB365 before you drive down on a Thursday.

Wander in Terror at the Desert of Maine, Freeport

95 Desert Road, Freeport. Six nights only in 2026: Thursday to Saturday, October 22, 23, 24 and October 29, 30, 31. Ticketed time slots between 6 pm and 9 pm. Ages 14 and up; under 14 with a parent or guardian. Eventbrite listed $28.52 per ticket on September 16.

The Desert of Maine is 20 acres of exposed glacial sand two miles off I-295 exit 20, and after dark in late October it became a haunted trail through the dunes and the surrounding pines. The walking portion was just under a mile, each time slot ran roughly 90 minutes, and the snack bar stayed open to 8:30 pm with mini golf until 9 pm at an extra charge. It was the newest and shortest-run haunt in the area, and with six nights and timed slots it was the one we expected to sell out; we did not check whether it did. Refunds were allowed up to seven days before the event.

One caution on the price. The $28.52 figure is what Eventbrite's own listing showed as the ticket price. When we read the Desert's own site on September 16 it did not print a separate Wander in Terror price, and Eventbrite's displayed figure can include fees. The Desert's daytime admission ($21 adult, $17 youth on that read) had nothing to do with it.

Ghoulish Golf at Aquaboggan, Saco

Friday to Sunday, October 2 to 31, 2026, weather dependent. Fridays and Saturdays 6 pm to 10 pm, Sundays 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. $15 per person, $2 off in costume. Tickets at the gate (2026 card).

Same address as the Trail of Terror, opposite temperament. Aquaboggan described its Halloween mini golf as "mostly Halloween themed" with "very few jump scares or actors," and added that some themes may be more intense than others. It was the option for a family with a nine-year-old who wanted the October atmosphere without the Banshee. The concession stand listed fried dough, warm cider, fried pickles and churro fries, which for some readers was the actual reason to go.

Wicked Walking Tours, Portland

Departs Bell Buoy Park, 60 Commercial Street, between Flatbread and the Casco Bay Lines terminal. 75 minutes, about a half mile on cobblestones. Adult or teen $34.99, senior, active military or veteran $29.99, child $24.99, per the booking page.

Portland's original ghost tour is not a haunt. It is a one-performer comedy of local history, covering ghosts, the witch trials, Abenaki raids and pirates, delivered as storytelling with standup. The operator's own site says it runs almost year round, so unlike the haunts it is the one item on this page that is not seasonal. When we read the booking calendar on September 16 it showed Saturday departures through September at 7:30 pm, and one October 3 departure at 7 pm appeared on one read and not another, so we could not state the fall schedule with confidence. Sold-out tours kept a cash-only wait list at an extra $5 per ticket, and the operator said there were always a few spots. Private tours carried a $900 minimum. Worth the drive: the two full-scale haunts beyond the ring

If you want a production haunt with actors, sets and a real scare budget, you are leaving Cumberland County. Both of these ran longer seasons than anything inside the ring.

Nightmare on the Ridge, Auburn

Wallingford's Orchard, Auburn. Sixteen dates from Saturday, September 19 through Saturday, October 31, 2026. $30 per person (2026 card), timed entry in four-minute slots. Roughly 40 minutes from Portland.

Nightmare on the Ridge is run out of a working orchard that the orchard's own site lists as open daily June through December for donuts and pick-your-own. The haunt sold timed entry through the orchard's own online shop, and the inventory was thin by design: when we opened an October 10 slot on September 16 it showed two tickets remaining. The 2026 calendar was Saturdays September 19 and 26, then Friday and Saturday October 2 and 3, Friday to Sunday October 9 to 11, Friday and Saturday October 16 and 17, Thursday to Saturday October 22 to 24, and Thursday to Saturday October 29 to 31. There was also a VIP ticket category. It was the one attraction on this page where the ticket page itself showed scarcity.

Haunted Grandview Manor, Lebanon

147 T M Wentworth Road, Lebanon. Its October schedule: Fridays and Saturdays 7 pm to 10 pm and Sundays 7 pm to 9 pm, full scare, $25. No-scare nights the last four Thursdays of October, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, $10. No-scare day walks October 17, 24 and 31, 1 pm to 3 pm, $10. Free parking. Roughly an hour from Portland.

Grandview is a mix of haunted trails and buildings: a funeral home set, cemeteries, shacks, a slaughterhouse, and a recurring character called the Pig Man. What made it unusual was the no-scare programming, which kept every set lit and open with no actors, at $10. It was the only attraction on this page that let a nervous kid walk the whole thing in daylight. One thing to know about the source: when we read it on September 16, Grandview's site listed its October schedule without printing the year. The three day-walk dates it named, October 17, 24 and 31, are all Saturdays in 2026, which is consistent with a current schedule, but we are telling you where the sentence came from.

What you will not find, and why the searches came up empty

On September 16 we searched two regional directories and eight operator sites, and found no commercial haunted hayride within an hour of Portland running in 2026. Every attraction above is a walk, a golf course or a tour. If you have a specific memory of a Gorham or Scarborough hayride, it was not on the operators' pages this year, and this guide names only what we could verify.

What we would plan for 2027

Halloween attractions run on a season that ends abruptly, so the useful question in November is what to watch for next fall. Our read from the 2026 cards: for adults and teens, the Desert of Maine's Wander in Terror was the format to book first, because six nights on the dunes with timed slots leaves little room to wait. The Trail of Terror in Saco was the flexible option, one ticket good for any night of its run. For a mixed-age group with a kid under ten, Ghoulish Golf was the one to pick over the trail. Wicked Walking Tours is the only item here that does not depend on October. And Nightmare on the Ridge was the one worth the 40-minute drive for a production haunt. We have not yet seen any operator's 2027 dates, and we will not guess them. We will re-read these eight operator pages in September 2027 and replace the 2026 prices with whatever they print.
