Driving Ranges Near Portland, Maine: Every Place to Hit Balls
The practice scene around Portland is oddly shaped, and the internet describes it badly. There is exactly one old-school standalone range in the area, on Route 302 in Westbrook, where the tees are real grass and the vibe has not changed in decades. There is a brand-new 20-bay Toptracer facility in Freeport that most locals still have not heard of, built by the state golf association itself. And there is a handful of course ranges of wildly varying seriousness, plus at least one beloved course that has no range at all, no matter what the aggregator sites claim.
We checked every facility below against its own website or operator in July 2026. That matters here more than most topics, because stale golf directories are still listing ranges at courses that closed years ago and inventing practice amenities at courses that never had them.

The two standalone options
Tee 'n Tee Golf, Westbrook. The region's classic range, at 23 Bridgton Road on Route 302, minutes from Portland. Thirty hitting bays, a practice putting green, and the thing that separates it from every mat-only operation in New England: 10,000 square feet of maintained grass tees. This is where you go to actually work on ball-striking, because turf does not lie the way a mat does. It is a PGA-certified teaching facility with Titleist club fitters and club repair on site, and there is beer in the shop. The catch is that it is seasonal and weather-dependent, open daily from 10 a.m. to sunset when it is open at all, and the website's season banner is famously slow to change. Their own advice is to check their Facebook page or text ahead before driving out, and it is good advice.
Maine Golf Center, Freeport. The newest and most technologically capable public range in the state: the Marr-Anderson Family Foundation Driving Range at the Alexa Re Rancourt Golf Learning Center, 2 Old County Road Ext in Freeport, opened by Maine Golf, the state golf association, in late 2025. All 20 bays carry Toptracer ball-tracking, so every shot gets carry, curve, and apex data, plus virtual courses and games through the app. Ten bays are covered and the bays have radiant heat, which quietly makes this the region's best shoulder-season practice spot. As of July 2026, a small bucket runs $12 and a large $19, with discounts for seniors, military and first responders, L.L. Bean employees, and Youth on Course juniors, who hit for $5 and $8. It is open seven days, with Monday mornings reserved for maintenance and the last bucket sold a half hour before close. Your money funds junior golf, which is a better use of a range fee than most.

Val Halla, Cumberland. The town-owned course at 60 Val Halla Road pairs the stiffest public test in the area with a driving range and two putting greens. This is the complete warm-up-then-play package, and the course is popular enough that the town runs a membership waitlist. Nonesuch River, Scarborough. A full-size practice range, two putting greens, and a real golf academy with beginner lessons and women's and junior clinics. Nonesuch is the best place in the area to take a lesson and immediately apply it on the attached 18, and its teaching operation is one of the most professionally run in southern Maine.
Gorham Country Club. A driving range plus putting and chipping zones on a 180-acre property, part of which is a designated Maine nature preserve. Gorham bills itself as the friendliest course in Maine, and the practice setup matches the personality: unfussy, cheap, and there when you need it, about 10 minutes from the Jetport.
Toddy Brook, North Yarmouth. A grass-tee driving range and practice putting green, per the club's own pro, and one of only two places on this list where you can practice off turf. Toddy Brook is also one of the first courses to open and last to close north of Portland each year, and it runs indoor simulators and a winter league when the snow comes, so it covers more of the calendar than almost anyone.
Riverside, Portland. The city's muni deserves an honest note rather than an inflated listing. Riverside's distinctive practice asset is its 3-hole practice loop, built in 2007 for junior programming and now the Portland home of First Tee. It is the best place in the region to take a kid from lesson to actual holes, and the course's pedigree is real: Riverside hosted 42 Maine Opens between 1938 and 2010, more than any other course in the state. Where there is no range
Willowdale, Scarborough publishes its amenities plainly: a putting green, a pro shop, and lessons. No driving range. Several national golf sites claim otherwise, which tells you how those sites are written. Willowdale is a lovely, walkable 1924 course and we recommend playing it; just warm up before you arrive.
