Adult Sports Leagues Near Portland, Maine: Fall Start Dates and What It Costs to Join Alone
The question almost nobody answers on these pages is the only one that matters if you are new here: what does it cost to sign up by yourself, with no team, and get put somewhere?
Every league operator publishes a team fee, because team fees are what captains shop for. The individual price is buried one page deeper under a different name, and it is the number that decides whether a person who moved to Portland in June ends up with a standing Thursday night or ends up scrolling. So that is what this page leads with. Below are the fall 2026 start dates for adult sports in Greater Portland, the free agent fee for each one, which leagues are already closed, and the five dollar option nobody advertises.
Everything here was read on the operators' own registration pages on August 16, 2026. Prices and capacity move fast in August, so click through before you plan an evening around it.
The one operator that runs most of it
Casco Bay Sports is the answer to "where do adults play sports here." It was founded in 2008, it says it moves more than 10,000 participants a year, and it runs seventeen league start dates between now and October across softball, soccer, kickball, flag football, basketball, bowling, pickleball, dodgeball and volleyball. Most of its leagues are 21 and over.
Its whole model is placing individuals. That is the part worth understanding: you do not need to know a soul, and the free agent fee is usually somewhere between a fifth and an eighth of the team fee.

The first figure is what one person pays to be placed on a team. The second is the whole team fee, which is what a captain pays for a roster of eight to ten. "Ask" means the operator publishes no solo price and sends you to an interested player email form instead. "None" means Thursday softball routes solo players to its Sunday league. Registration for both Monday soccer leagues opens September 1, and the October volleyball league is a deposit waitlist rather than an open registration.
Cheapest way in: kickball at $95 for a five week season plus a playoff tournament, six games guaranteed. Most expensive: pickleball at $175, which buys six weeks of ninety minute slots and five or six games a night, so per game it is not the outlier it looks like.
Three things that table will not tell you.
Soccer and bowling do not sell you a solo spot. Every other sport on the list has a published free agent price you can pay online. Both soccer leagues and both bowling leagues instead tell individuals to fill out an interested player email form, which means no price, no guarantee and a wait for a reply. If your plan is to be playing by a specific date, that distinction matters more than the fee does. Thursday softball is a third variant: its page routes free agents to the Sunday league instead.
Wednesday softball is closed. Its own page reads "At Capacity" and its status field says Closed. The Thursday softball season starting August 20 is the live one, and it caps at twelve teams.
Volleyball is not open, it is a waitlist with a deposit. The Monday indoor league at The Point wants a refundable deposit to hold your place, and its own page states that current teams get first refusal and spots only open if somebody does not come back. If volleyball is the sport you actually want, put the deposit down now for October and plan on something else for September.

What the towns run, and what they do not
This is where the honest version departs from what you would guess. Greater Portland's municipal recreation departments run almost no adult team leagues. They run drop-in.
South Portland is the exception, and it is a real one. Parks, Recreation and Waterfront runs an actual adult basketball league: a Monday league September 14 to November 30 and a women's league Thursdays September 10 to November 12, both at the South Portland Community Center, both $75 for residents and $85 for everybody else. That is per player, for eight regular season games plus a ten team single elimination playoff. It is 18 and over, out of high school, five on five with at least one man and one woman on the floor, and the scoring is weighted so women's shots are worth an extra point. Free agents register under the free agent group and get placed first come, first served.
The fall registration deadline is Monday, August 31. Winter leagues follow in December. Call (207) 767-7650 if the online form gives you trouble.
Compare that $75 to Casco Bay Sports basketball at $125 as a free agent, or $925 for a team of eight, and the municipal league is roughly forty percent cheaper for a longer season. It is also the only adult basketball league in the region that is not run by a private operator.
Scarborough's page is titled "Adult Leagues and Sports" and lists no leagues. Under its own Adult League and Open Gyms heading it reads "There are no events to display." What it does have is drop-in basketball at Wentworth Gym, 20 Quentin Drive, Mondays 8:00 to 9:30 pm through the school year, $5 per person, cash only.
Westbrook's catalog has no adult team sports at all. Filter its registration catalog to Adult Programs and you get trips, aquatics and fitness classes. That is not a criticism of the Community Center, which is a genuinely good building. It is just not where you find a league.
Falmouth runs pick-up basketball, not leagues, and the fall session was not posted yet. Two groups, Thursdays for 18 and over and Sundays for 30 and over, both at the middle school gym on Middle Road. The summer sessions ended in late July and both listings now read closed. The mechanism is worth knowing because it survives the gap: you buy a punch card at the gym, $40 for ten dates, and it does not expire and works for any adult pick-up session in any season. Buy one in October and it is still good in March. We could not confirm the fall dates on the town's own site, which was returning a server error the morning this was written, so call Community Programs rather than trusting a listing.
The five dollar option nobody advertises
If you want to play this week and you do not want to commit to a season, South Portland's open gym schedule is the best deal in Greater Portland and it opens in the first week of October.
$5 for South Portland residents, $7 for everyone else, $1 for active and veteran military, and you have to show ID each visit. Frequent user passes are sold at the community center front desk.
- Basketball: over 40 Sundays 8:00 to 9:30 am at Redbank; over 30 Sundays 2:00 to 3:45 pm at the community center; 18 and over lunchtime Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 11:30 am to 1:30 pm; 18 and over Wednesday evenings 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Redbank. All from early October into late May.
- Pickleball: weekday mornings 7:30 to 11:00 am at the community center (six courts, forty player cap) and Monday and Wednesday mornings at Redbank (three courts, twenty four player cap), plus Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Redbank through December 10.
- Volleyball: Sunday afternoons 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
One caution, because we checked the page against itself: the volleyball listing's description says the season runs October 4 to May 2, while the registration line directly beneath it says November 15 to May 2. Those cannot both be right. Call before you drive over for an early October Sunday.
Two dead ends worth knowing about
Portland's recreation department links to a kickball organization that has no Maine league. The city's recreation page lists the World Adult Kickball Association among its quick links. Follow it and you land on CLUBWAKA's own market list: twenty six markets, and Maine is not one of them. The nearest are Boston, Worcester and Providence. If you want kickball here, it is the Casco Bay Sports Thursday league at Payson Park, which is the $95 line in the table above.
PortSports has nothing open. The Portland volleyball outfit founded in 2007 currently lists four beach volleyball leagues at Deering Oaks, all summer, all with registration windows that closed in July. Its front page still announces winter registration opening "Friday, December 5th," and December 5 fell on a Friday in 2025, not 2026. Treat that page as last winter's until they update it.
Portland Ultimate exists but its website does not help. The site is live, the announcements Google Group is the working channel, and the Leagues panel lists nothing at all. The artwork on its front page is dated 2015.
How to actually do this
If you are alone and want to be playing something within three weeks, the shortest path is: pay the $95 kickball free agent fee for August 20, or register as a free agent for South Portland basketball before the August 31 deadline. Both put you on a roster with strangers who also signed up alone. That is the whole point of a free agent slot, and it is the single most underused door into this town's social life. If a league is the wrong shape for you, the run clubs, book clubs and groups that actually take newcomers work the same way, and so does a bowling league, which is the cheapest thirty week social commitment in the city.
And if none of this works, the honest answer is that repetition matters more than the activity. Building a life here after you move comes down to showing up in the same room on the same night until the same faces become people you know.
